South Lanarkshire Council - floodlight pollution

This is the main council building for South Lanarkshire council. Just before christmas 2005 they installed eight floodlights as part of a local arts project involving a youth group. The rest of the light dispay was temporary and has now finished, the floodlights pictured illuminating the building, surrounding area and cloud base are a permanent feature now though. "Anti-light pollution shields" are intended to be added by the council in April 2006.

1 second exposure, ISO400 with a Canon 10D and 50mm lens.
Picture Added on 20 January 2006.

Seems ridiculous that a Local Authority, who should be setting an example of energy efficiency and being good neighbours, should vandalise the night sky in this way. Is there a local campaign to try to get them to remove these pointless monstrosities?

Hi Colin, I haven't heard of any campaigns, though everyone I've talked to about it thinks its a lot of **** and a waste of tax payers money. I'm waiting to see what effect the "anti light pollution lights" they intend to install have (not much I presume, as a lot of that light is reflected off the building) and will get onto them about it again.
