Tanker light pollution at Nigg Oil Terminal
Once or twice a week an oil tanker delivers or collects oil at the Nigg Oil Terminal in the Cromarty Firth (inner Moray Firth). In the darker period of the year this is the sort of light dispaly that results. The oil industry is a wealthy one, so it seems strange that they haven't spent a litle money specifying downward pointing lighting on tankers and other related shipping. Even allowing for the low cloud which reflects the light in this shot, the amount of light wasted in dazzle and glow into the sky is quite breathtaking. The area directly behind and to the right of the tanker is an important reserve and feeding area for thousands of migrating geese and waders, so I'm surpirsed the RSPB isn't concerned about this too. Maybe they don't know?
