Orkney College, Stromness - lighting energy waste

This is a picture of a well sited but poorly used floodlight on the wall of the Orkney College Maritime Studies Department in Stromness. It faces mostly down, so there is little glare and excess light at night time. Unfortunately it's left switched on 24 hours a day - a thoughtless waste of energy in a town likely to be one of the first to suffer from rising sea levels caused by global warming brought on partly by our profligacy in the use of energy.

UPDATE:

According to a site visitor (comment below) this light is now controlled by a photoelectric switch to ensure that it comes on only at night. Excellent. Well done Orkney College, and thanks for listening.

Comments

You would do well to update your comments, the light has been on a photoelectric switch since shortly after the pic was published.
I agree with the purpose of your campaign, but feel that leaving outdated /inaccurate comments in public view undermines its effectiveness.

Thanks for the heads up SRM. I agree that out of date comments can be misleading (though still helping to raise the profile of the problem), and update them when I have seen that circumstances have changed, or if someone emails me. Unfortunately, though I emailed the College a couple of times, they never replied, and I haven't been back to Stromness yet. Many thanks for the good news, though, and I've added a note to this effect below the description above.
