Floodlight spill light, Sundial Farm, Wentworth

Elevated view of Sundial Farm, Lea Brook Lane, Wentworth, Rotherham.
When the floodlights go on at Sundial farm, (inset upper right) it’s not just the ménage that gets illuminated. Due to a combination of ill designed and directed floodlighting light is able to spill far beyond its intended target.

The main image shows Mexborough & Swinton Astronomical Society’s observatory dome bathed in spill light - my shadow and that of nearby trees are clearly visible. This is disastrous, not only for the society, but any one who wishes to observe from what is regarded as a dark rural location.

It is a disaster, that the lights are incorrectly installed, however, they do turn them off well before we (the society www.msas.org.uk) open the dome shutters. What can be done to prevent these silly installations? I see no way of enforcement via the council, as they are installing white light street light's (which is proven to reduce crime and the fear of crime) yeah right -

My god! Anyone would think the lights are on 24/7. They're on for about 2 hours at most in the winter, if that. Get over it!

'They're on for about 2 hours at most in the winter'

But that's no reason not to have them aimed properly downwards so they light the place where they're needed, and not areas that don't need it. How much hassle would that really be, after all?
