Light pollution sky glow over South Yorkshire

Elevated view overlooking Mexborough, Rotherham, Sheffield, and Hoyland. This image clearly demonstrates the extent to which vast amounts of energy are being frivolously wasted on illuminating the clouds above, rather than the streets and highways down below.

The human eye is very good at adapting to low light conditions, so no need for masses of street lights, cars have very good head lights so can see the road ahead quite well, sure I have read that the street lights on major roads can have the opposite effect, ie drivers become complacent and do not concentrate when they can see for miles ahead of them.
