Bath Bus Station - badly aimed floodlights
There are three of these floodlights along the front of the Bus Station in Bath which, were they properly mounted, would provide safe and effective night-time lighting of the coach arrival and departure area for passengers and drivers.
Unfortunately, the fittings are asymmetric floodlights designed to be mounted horizontally throwing light down and forwards at an angle of around 45 degrees to minimise dazzle and glare, but they have been tilted incorrectly upwards.
The floodlights are sited at about 75 degrees above horizontal, which means that the light is shining at 45 + 75 degrees = 30 degrees _above_ the horizontal. Basically most of the light is going into the sky and not down onto the forecourt of the bus station where really needed. Not only is this a great waste of energy, but at this angle the light produced is likely to be very dazzling for arriving coach drivers (like driving into un-dipped headlights), a dangerous situation in a busy bus station where passengers are milling about. It also adds to the unpleasant sky glow above this beautiful city.
The main Bus operator in Bath is FirstBus, so presumably they are responsible for overseeing maintenance of he Bus Station. Come on FirstBus, dip those lights please.

I emailed firstgroup about this and they responded. Apparently these lights had been damaged by high winds and pushed out of alignment. However, the bus station is about to be demolished, and they assure me that the new station will be fitted with correctly positioned cut-off lighting.
well done firstgroup.
